Every coffee has a story, and this coffee is no exception.
This beautiful Guatemala offering comes from one of the Vides family farms(Vides58) - La Finca Sarral.
The story began with a Physician named Jorge Vides in La Libertdad, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Jorge purchased his first coffee farm, Finca La Bolsa, in 1958, which now shares a border with Finca El Sarral.
Jorge worked as a Physician treating patients Monday through Friday, and worked on the coffee farm during all other hours. He became director of the National Hospital of Huehuetenango, which was later named after him.
In 1980, Jorge founded a school on his coffee farm which was authorized by the National Ministry of Education to educate young people in the community and still exists till this day.
In 2001, Jorge, his children, and his grand children, decided to transition the farm towards entirely growing specialty coffee. In 2002, coffee from the Vides Family won 2nd place in the Guatemalan Cup of Excellence.
Vides58 also established a joint program with the Association Coffee Care - which is an organization dedicated to reducing instances of child labor by offering educational and recreational programs to children ages 2 to 14.
Today, Vides58 is family owned and operated. The family manages several farms, including Finca La Bolsa and Finca El Sarral.
To honor the founder, we named this offering SALUD! which means in good health to commemorate the work Jorge did in the medical field, and the health benefits of drinking his delicious coffee. He is featured on our bag, along with a Quetzal on his shoulder, which is Guatemala's well recognized National Bird.
